چکیده

This study investigates the specific role of the VEGF-isoforms in pathological choroidal/retinal angiogenesis, as their role in physiological angiogenesis was already described (1,2). VEGFisoform specific mice (VEGF , VEGF 164/ 164 and VEGF mice) were bred to study the role of the VEGF isoforms in pathological angiogenesis. In these mice, two established models of pathological angiogenesis were induced, laser-induced choroidal neovascularisation (CV) (3) and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) (4). The amount of the newly formed blood vessels was determined on wholemounted retinas/choroids.

Oxalomalate reduces expression and secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor in the retinal pigment epithelium and inhibits angiogenesis: Implications for age-related macular degeneration

Clinical and experimental observations indicate a critical role for vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), secreted by the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), in pathological angiogenesis and the development of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in age-related macular degeneration (AMD). RPE-mediated VEGF expression, leading to angiogenesis, is a major signaling mechanism underlying ocular ne...

Baseline subfoveal choroidal thickness as an indicator for bevacizumab outcomes in central retinal vein occlusion

Background: Retinal vein occlusions are one of the most common form of retinal vascular disorders and could lead to vision loss due to macular edema, macular ischemia and sequelae from neovascularization. Anti-venous endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) treatment is the choice strategy of treatment for patients with macular edema secondary to central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). There is an ...

Placental Growth Factor Inhibition for Choroidal Neovascularization

Placental growth factor (PlGF) is a member of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) family of angiogenesis factors. It has the highest expression level in the endothelium as compared to other VEGF family members and plays an important role in pathological neovascularization. 1 In humans, four isoforms of PlGF exist (PlGF-1 through 4). Mice only express a single isoform of PlGF which is ...

Placental growth factor and its potential role in diabetic retinopathy and other ocular neovascular diseases

The role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), including in retinal vascular diseases, has been well studied, and pharmacological blockade of VEGF is the gold standard of treatment for neovascular age-related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion and diabetic macular oedema. Placental growth factor (PGF, previously known as PlGF), a homologue of VEGF, is a multifunctional peptide...

Vascular endothelial growth factor-B gene transfer exacerbates retinal and choroidal neovascularization and vasopermeability without promoting inflammation

PURPOSE The role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-B in the eye is poorly understood. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of overexpression of VEGF-B via adeno-associated virus (AAV) gene transfer on ocular angiogenesis, inflammation, and the blood-retinal barrier (BRB). METHODS Three recombinant AAV vectors were prepared, expressing the 167 (AAV-VEGF-B167) or 18...
